The Jam - Long Version
December 28, 2008 11:02 AM PST
The quality isn't very good on this recording. It was recorded with a hand held tape recorder and 2 hand held microphones when the band was playing at Murphy's Chuckwagon. I had to include it because of the AWESOME drum solo by Jim Pagano. It still makes me smile and gives me chills when I listen to it. IT'S AWESOMELY SPECTACULAR! And by the way, that's a single peddle bass drum. The picture is the only one I have of Jim playing. It was taken at the 132 Club in Trenton on Halloween. All the band members dressed up. Sorry Jim. We Shall Meet Again

One of 6 original songs from the Cut Glass RCA recording. This is a very personal song written by Tom Marolda (one of the Cut Glass founders) because within a 10 day span he lost his mother, his father and his grandmother. It attempts to explain a life none of us knew or really thought about until we sat on the recording studio floor after countless hours of recording and listened to ourselves for the first time. The ending of the song was added in the studio to give time to reflect on the everlasting pain of death and the potential happiness of a meeting in the future between tightly knit family members. Life Sonata #2

Another song from the RCA recording, this was an optimistic song written so the band could have fun and kick hard for a few minutes. (written by Tom Marolda) Ball & Chain

This piece was written as a commercial tune. Tell Me Am I Wrong

This song soon became the theme song of Cut Glass. The more the group was forced to alter its initial goals the more they reflected on this song. It represents individuals and groups alike and it asks the question "Am I wrong to pursue my life long dream." Bird

Steve (the trombone player) relayed a story to me that he seemed to remember Tom Marolda was in his bedroom one day and watched a bird fly around, land on the window sill, fly around, land on the window sill, and did this several more times until it finally flew away. THE JAM

Another original (the short version) from the RCA recording. This song closed each set. I think it speaks for itself. |
About CutGlass BandThe musical group formerly known as Cut Glass was formed in June, 1969 in Trenton, NJ by Jim Pagano and Tom Marolda. The idea behind the formation of this group was to incorporate a jazz oriented horn section with a strong rhythm section for the sole purpose of doing original material. Once assembled the group rehearsed 6 nights a week for 9 months before emerging in front of the public. All the members worked day jobs and attended college while they readied themselves to ful time with their music. Principle songwriter Tom Marolda didn't stay with the group as a road performer but maintained his status as songwriter/arranger with the group. The group recorded in such studios as RCA, Columbia and Record Plant East in New York City. They also played in the New Jersey Public Broadcasting System Inaugural Show with Dizzy Gillespie in April 1971 and were asked to return to do a 30 minute special featuring some of the group's original songs. The group had played in numerous clubs (Geneva Inn, Charley's Brother, Tremont Lounge, 132 Club, Satellite Lounge, Murphy's Chuckwagon), concerts and even across the border. They were represented for a while by the Joseph Drift Agency. The group disbanded in 1972 but they always caried the high and the low memories of their lives together. But in 1979 CUT GLASS WAS BACK! The band occasionally played their originals but disco was in so they fell into the groove. Their home base was primarily 'Alley Oops'. Unfortunately they disbanded again. THE EARLY 70'S PLAYERS: Tom Marolda - bass, vocals, writer/arranger; Jim Pagano - drums, percussion; Steve Hopkins - trombone; Rich Sbarro - trumpet, keyboards, vocals; Nick Sbarro - trumpet; Jim Moses - trumpet, flugelhorn (replaced Nick); Mike Chmiko - alto sax; Gary Young - bass, vocals (replaced Tom Marolda); Sam Falzone - guitar, vocals; Tom Liwacz - keyboards, lead vocals. THE EARLY 80'S PLAYERS: Jim Pagano - drums, percussion; Steve Hopkins - trombone; Rich Sbarro - trumpet, vocals; Gary Young - bass, vocals; Joe Nicholls - guitar; Mike Palumbo - keyboards, lead vocals; Tom Sereni - sax.
